    Pair Analytics in a Visual Analytics Context

    This case study details the development of “pair analytics” as practical approach to applied analysis and as a scientific research method. The hybrid research project itself was part of a larger research program approved for the Canadian government for their offset program and supported by Federal and Provincial research internships. As a real-world analysis approach, the pair analysis sessions conduced actionable causal chain analysis of aircraft safety. As a scientific method, pair analytics advanced our knowledge of the cognitive science of interpersonal communication in Joint Activities. The paper describes how aerospace researchers and cognitive scientists were able to design a research approach that met constraints from both areas. It concludes with discussion of the implications of this work for highly integrated basic and responsive research in other areas of visualization and analytics

    Ped-Air: A Simulator for Loading, Unloading, and Evacuating Aircraft

    AbstractWe present Ped-Air, a pedestrian simulation system to model the loading, unloading, and evacuation of commercial aircraft. We address the challenge of simulating passenger movement in constrained spaces (e.g., aisles and rows), along with complex, coordinating behaviors between the passengers. Ped-Air models different categories of passengers and flight crew, capturing their unique behaviors and complex interactions. We exhibit Ped-Airs capabilities by simulating passenger movements on two representative aircraft: a single-aisle Boeing 737, and a double-aisle Boeing 777. We are able to simulate the following behaviors: stress, luggage placement, flight staff assisting passengers, obstructed exits for evacuation

    USING PVDF FILMS AS FLEXIBLE PIEZOELECTRIC GENERATORS FOR BIOMECHANICAL ENERGY HARVESTING

    In this paper, a commercial polymeric piezoelectric film, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used to harvest electrical energy during the execution of five locomotion activities (walking, going down and up the stairs, jogging and running). The PVDF film transducer was placed into a tight suit in proximity of four body joints (shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle). The RMS values of the power output measured during the five activities were in the range 0.1 – 10 µW depending on the position of the film transducer on the body. This amount of electrical power allows increasing the operation time of wearable systems, and it may be used to prolong the monitoring of human vital signals for personalized health, wellness, and safety applications
